just because you can doesn’t mean you’re not an asshole

yes, I’m one of those people who’ll sit at home at night, get huffy about stupid, arbitrary decisions by the PM and write up a stupid little email to my MP which has absolutely no chance of being replied to and most likely won’t make it passed his secretary but whatever. Due to today’s announcement that the House will break session until March, I sent this to my local MP:

Considering Mr. Harper has decided that his government need not work for two months, I was wondering who to contact about asking that my taxes be prorogued for the time during which we will be living without a session of Parliament. It seems only fair that either I, and other Canadians, not pay for something that isn’t being used. Parliament is after all a public institution whose purpose is to develop and implement public policies and practices funded through the collection of finances from hard working citizens. In this case, since no work will be conducted for upwards of two months, I see no reason why further collection of financial resources be necessary for this break in session. Certainly, your party has budgeted accordingly for the wealth of social programming delivered throughout the country so there should be no problem in halting the taxation of Canadians until a new session sits.

I for one am looking forward to two months without federal taxes which, in part, obviously contribute to your salary and the salary of all other MPs who will now not be providing representation for the public in the House of Commons until the beginning of March.

I would like to thank you in advance for the cessation of federal taxes on my income. I expect I’ll be able to visit your constituency office in the near future to reclaim any finances mistakenly collected.

Thank you.
